Characterized by its white crystalline form, barium carbonate has a low solubility in water, forming a weakly alkaline solution when it minimally dissolves. It decomposes into carbon dioxide and barium salts under acidic conditions, with a melting point of roughly 1740 °C.
Barium carbonate's applications are vast, particularly in the electronics industry where it is used to produce PTC thermal components, chip components, and semiconductor capacitors. It is also vital in the creation of optical and picture tube glass, barium magnetic materials, and capacitors. Its applications further encompass steel carburizing and metal surface treatments, and it is a fundamental material in the production of barium salts, ceramics, enamels, pigments, coatings, rubber, and welding rods.
It also operates as a water purifier and rodenticide. Due to its toxic nature, it requires careful management to prevent the formation of toxic barium compounds that can cause poisoning with symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, and in severe cases, arrhythmia and respiratory paralysis.
Barium carbonate is an important source of barium oxide. The use of powdered barium carbonate in the production of structural ceramics can improve the hardness, wear resistance and chemical corrosion of ceramic tiles. Adding barium carbonate to ceramics can reduce pores and bubbles, improve the semi-transparency, expand the sintering range, and increase the coefficient of thermal expansion. Barium is used as the glaze to improve the baking and rubbing resistance of the glaze, and the color is firm, bright and stable.
