Magnesite has a wide range of USES, mainly used as metallurgical refractory, but also used in sintering flux, building materials, chemical and light industry and other industries, as well as refining metal magnesium, etc.Except for a small amount of magnesite which can be used directly without calcination, most of them have to be calcined before processing and utilization. When the magnesite ore is calcined at a temperature of 700-1000 ºC, THE CO2 does not completely escape and becomes a kind of powdery substance, called lightly burned magnesite, also called caustic magnesite. It has strong chemical activity and is easy to react with water to form magnesium hydroxide. When it is calcined at 1450-1800 ºC, CO2 completely escapes, and MgO forms a magnesite compact block, which is called sintered magnesite and has a very high fire resistance. It is melted in an arc furnace at a temperature of about 3000ºC and cooled to form electrofused magnesium oxide, or molten magnesium oxide, consisting of calcite crystals.Magnesium oxide calcined at high temperature does not easily combine with water and carbonic acid.
The 95% output of magnesite is used as magnesite refractory, which is mainly made of sintered magnesite.Various magnesia bricks (such as ordinary magnesia brick, magnesia brick, magnesia silicon brick, magnesia chrome brick, magnesia carbon brick and high purity magnesia brick, etc.) are made from sintered magnesite or a small amount of other materials (such as bauxite or industrial alumina, chromite, graphite, etc.).Compared with other refractories, the refractoriness of magnesium refractory materials is higher, up to more than 2000ºC, it has a higher softening temperature under load and higher mechanical strength at high temperature.Sintered magnesite can also be used as ramming material and charging material in metallurgical furnace after being crushed.Fused magnesia used for fused magnesia brick, magnesia carbon brick, medium and high frequency induction furnace, magnesium crucible, furnace tube and high temperature electrical insulation materials, etc.Magnesium cement (magnesium oxychloride cement), made by combining lightly burned magnesite with solutions of magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate, has high viscosity, plasticity and bonding properties, and is used as building materials, decorative materials, heat and sound insulation materials, artificial grindstones and grinding wheels. In terms of chemical products, cosmetics, toothpaste, refractory mineral pigments, rubber, paper making, sugar making, melting agent of iron and steel smelting, uranium processing, industrial sewage treatment, flue gas desulfurization, chemical fertilizer and feed preparation, light burned magnesite is mostly used, while natural forms of magnesite are used in a small part.
