Melamine is a triazine-containing nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C₃H₆N₆ and a molecular weight of 126.12. Its appearance is white monoclinic crystals, with a melting point of approximately 354ºC (sublimation), and a density of 1.57g/cm³. It is insoluble in water, ethylene glycol, glycerol and pyridine, and slightly soluble in ethanol. Melamine forms salts with acids (such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, formic acid, oxalic acid, etc.) and condenses with formaldehyde to form various hydroxymethyl melamine. It transforms into trichloroaniline in water. At 600ºC, it decomposes and generates cyanamide.

PRODUCTIVE PROCESS

The industrial production methods of melamine include the dihydroxyurea method, the urea method, and the hydrocyanic acid method. Among them, the urea method is the most commonly used. Using urea as the raw material, under high temperatures of 380-400ºC and with ammonia gas as the carrier, it is catalytically converted into cyanic acid and then condensed into melamine. Finally, it is purified through crystallization. Melamine has a wide range of applications. It can be reacted with formaldehyde to produce dozens of different types of resins. It can be molded or made into thin sheets, or used as a treatment agent for fabric creasing resistance and shrinkage prevention, as well as an impregnating paper. In addition, melamine can also be used as a bonding agent and a coating material.

In the building materials field, it is added as a flame retardant to the boards, which can significantly enhance the fire resistance of the materials;

In the coatings industry, when combined with resins, it can enhance the wear resistance and adhesion of the coatings;

In plastic processing, it can be used as a modifier to increase the hardness and impact resistance of the products. The additionratio needs to be adjusted according to the specific process. For example, when synthesizing resins, it is usually mixed with formaldehyde in a weight ratio of 1:2 to 3, and heated and reacted under the action of acidic or alkaline catalysts. During the operation, protective equipment must be worn to avoid inhalation of dust or skin contact.
